On 11 July 2009, the ‘Gedenkstätte KZ-Außenlager Schlieben-Berga e. V.’ association was founded.
The association’s main objectives:
- Fostering, within the region, a climate that enables the tragic period associated with the subcamp and the HASAG munitions factory to be addressed, and researching, documenting and publicising it in keeping with Germany’s historical responsibility and that of the people living and working in the region
- Fostering an awareness of this historical burden and responsibility, and of the duty to remember and admonish what took place at the time
- Commemorating and honouring the victims
- Promoting the coordination of regional, national and international activities relating to research into the subcamp and the HASAG munitions factory in Schlieben-Berga, including their networking with other former concentration camps and munitions factories, and with the ‘mechanisms of impact’ of the National Socialist past
- Promoting a creative and critical engagement with history, involving schools and educational institutions as well as local and historical research
- Initiating, accompanying and supporting projects for the research, documentation and museum-oriented, touristic development of the site, including the preservation of existing buildings and paths, the responsible reconstruction of buildings, paths and facilities, and the collection of documents, furnishings, everyday objects, equipment and other remains that serve documentation, commemoration and admonition
- Promoting national and international contacts in order to achieve the association’s objectives
- Public relations work in the interest of the association, in particular to foster a climate of responsible engagement with history in the region, to publicise documents, findings and results of local and historical research and the methods used, to maintain the exchange of experience with other regional and supra-regional associations and initiatives, to present the results of research into the subcamp and the HASAG munitions factory in the media, and to promote broad public awareness of the association’s aims and activities
- Organising exhibitions, forums, specialist events and lectures
- Participating in the activities of other groups pursuing similar aims
- Supporting the acquisition of grants and funding, insofar as these are not already provided through statutory provisions, funding programmes or sponsoring institutions
